You can take your child with you to the canteen

Students in Münster and Steinfurt can apply for a children’s plate pass. This allows your child up to the age of 14 to eat with you for free in the canteen.

This requires a consultation at our advice center. During the consultation, we will explain everything to you and give you the children’s plate pass. Click on the button below to book an appointment with us.

This is how you can pay

As a student at University of Applied Sciences Münster and the University of Münster, you can pay with your student ID. Your student ID is not only your ID card, but also your payment card. You can use it in the canteens, bistros and at vending machines. You can also pay with your Girocard, credit card or a MensaCard. The MensaCard is available for guests.

Paying with the "MensaCard" card

You can also pay with the MensaCard. You can get the MensaCard at the info point. Bring your student ID with you if you have one. The MensaCard costs 5 euros once. You can top up the card with money. You can top up amounts up to 50 euros at vending machines. You can top up the MensaCard at the tills or online. Click on the following button.

Mensa am Aasee

  • Location: The address is Bismarckallee 11 in Münster. The canteen is located directly at Aasee and is easily accessible from the city center.
  • Information: There is room for over 1,100 guests. We offer vegetarian and vegan dishes as well as meals with meat and fish. You can choose your own side dishes. There is also a salad bar, a seasonal stew, special dishes and desserts.
  • Opening hours: Monday to Friday from 11:45 – 14:30

Mensa am Ring

  • Location: The address is Domagkstraße 61 in Münster. The canteen is close to the natural science institutes, the medical faculty and the departments of psychology, sports science, mathematics and computer science at the University of Münster.
  • Information: The largest canteen in Münster offers vegetarian and vegan dishes as well as meals with meat and fish. You can put together your own side dishes. There is also a salad bar, a seasonal stew, changing dishes and a dessert buffet.
  • Opening hours: Monday to Friday from 08:30 – 15:00
  • Serving times: Monday to Friday from 11:15 – 14:15 and during the semester break Monday to Friday from 11:30 – 14:00

Mensa Bispinghof

  • Location: The address is Bispinghof 9, centrally located on campus and close to the castle.
  • Information: There are 152 seats and a sunny terrace. There are different vegan and vegetarian dishes every day. There is also a salad bar, special dishes and desserts.
  • Opening hours: Monday to Friday from 11:00 – 15:00
  • Food serving: Monday to Friday from 11:00 – 14:30

Mensa Da Vinci

  • Location: The address is Leonardo-Campus 8 and the canteen is centrally located on the Leonardo-Campus.
  • Information: The canteen offers 193 seats and a large sun terrace. There are vegan and vegetarian dishes as well as meals with meat and fish. There is also a salad bar, special dishes and desserts.
  • Opening hours: Monday to Friday from 11:30 – 15:00
  • Hot food serving: Monday to Friday from 11:30 – 14:30

Mensa Steinfurt

  • Location: The address is Stegerwaldstraße 39 in Steinfurt. The canteen is located directly on the campus of the University of Applied Sciences in Steinfurt.
    Information: The canteen has a beautiful outdoor terrace. There are vegan and vegetarian dishes as well as meals with meat and fish. There is also a salad bar, special dishes and desserts.
  • Opening hours: Monday to Friday from 07:30 – evening (the dining room is available as a self-study area until the evening)
  • Food served from Monday to Friday from 07:30 for breakfast and from 11:15 to 14:15 for hot meals

Bistro Denkpause

  • Location: The address is Corrensstraße 25 in Münster. The bistro is located in the center of the University of Applied Sciences.
  • Opening hours: Monday to Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
  • Hot food serving: Monday to Friday from 11:30 – 14:15

Bistro Durchblick

  • Location: Fliednerstraße 21 in Münster
  • Information: There is a daily special with a changing vegetarian or vegan option. Hot and cold drinks, sandwiches and snacks are also available.
  • Opening hours: Monday to Thursday from 07:45 – 15:00
  • Hot food serving: Monday to Thursday from 11:30 – 14:30 and Friday from 07:45 – 13:45

Hier und Jetzt

  • Location: Bismarckallee 11 in Münster
  • Information: You can eat inside or on the terrace. In the afternoon, it’s a good place to study or meet for coffee and cake. There are vegan and vegetarian dishes, homemade cakes and hot and cold drinks.
  • Opening hours: Monday to Friday from 11:00 – 22:00
  • Hot meals: Monday to Friday from 11:30 – 15:00 and 17:00 – 21:00

Bistro KaBu

  • Location: Fürstenberghaus on Domplatz
  • Information: There is a dish of the day every day, which is available as a vegetarian or vegan option as well as a meat or fish dish. Hot and cold drinks, sandwiches and snacks are also available.
  • Opening hours: Monday to Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and during the semester break Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
  • Hot food serving: Monday to Friday from 11:00 – 14:00

Bistro katho

  • Location: Piusallee 89 in Münster
  • Information: A dish of the day is offered every day, either as a vegetarian or vegan option or with meat or fish. There are also hot and cold drinks, sandwiches and snacks.
  • Opening hours: Monday to Thursday from 8:00 – 14:30 and closed during the semester break
  • Hot food serving: Monday to Thursday from 11:30 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. and Friday from 8:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.

Bistro Oeconomicum

  • Location: Universitätsstraße 14-16, Münster
  • Information: A daily special with a changing vegetarian or vegan option or with meat/fish. There are also hot and cold drinks, vouchers and snacks.
  • Opening hours: Monday to Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and during the semester break from Monday to Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
  • Hot food distribution: Monday to Friday from 11:00 – 16:00 and during the semester break from Monday to Friday from 11:00 – 15:00

Bistro PI

  • Location: In the mathematics building at Einsteinstraße 62 in Münster
  • Information: The bistro offers sandwiches, hot and cold drinks and confectionery. Outside of opening hours, it can be used by students as a self-study area.
  • Opening hours: Monday to Friday from 08:00 – 14:30, closed during the semester break.

VIVA Campus Café

  • Location: The VIVA Campus Café is located at Mensa am Ring, Domagkstraße 61.
  • Information: Pizzas, hot and cold drinks, waffles, sandwiches and snacks are available daily.
  • Opening hours: Monday to Friday from 08:30 – 15:00

Are you looking for a cheap apartment in Münster or Steinfurt? We can help you

We have apartments and rooms in 23 residential complexes. There are a total of 5,390 places. All apartments have internet access. The rent for the apartments starts at 278.84 euros per month. You can live in an apartment for up to 8 semesters.

Do you have a disability or children?

Students with disabilities and students with children are given priority when looking for accommodation. We have extra apartments with special parking spaces for them. Get in touch early if you need such an apartment.

We also have apartments for wheelchair users

We have apartments for wheelchair users. These are barrier-free and partially furnished. The locations are:

  • Bismarckallee 49-51: 3 single rooms with shower and WC
  • Gescherweg 50-64: 4 two-room apartments with furniture
  • Gemenweg 78-86: 4 three-room apartments, sometimes with furniture
  • Rudolf-Harbig-Weg 14-46: 8 two-room apartments, sometimes with furniture

You have to pay a deposit for the apartment

If you get an apartment, you will have to pay a deposit of €200 to €400. However, you will get the deposit back when you move out. You can live in one of our apartments for up to 8 semesters.

You should insure yourself when you rent an apartment with us

You are not automatically insured. We recommend that you take out household contents insurance and liability insurance when you move into one of our apartments.

How you can apply for the apartments

We have many residential complexes in Münster and Steinfurt. You can easily search for the right apartment for you on our website. You can then apply for apartments using the application form on our website.

Step 2: Select up to 3 apartments from
In the application form, select up to three apartments that you like. Then fill in all the other fields. Then submit the form.

Step 3: You will receive monthly emails from us
If there are currently no apartments available, you will receive an email from us every month. If you are still interested in an apartment, you must then confirm this. This will keep you on our waiting list.

Step 4: You will receive offers from us
If we have an apartment for you, you will receive offers by e-mail.

Our tenant and applicant portal

You can find all the important information about your apartment in the tenant and applicant portal. You can manage your data, report damage or upload documents.

These functions are available to you

  • Change data: Always keep your personal information up to date.
  • Upload documents: Upload important documents such as a passport photo or certificate of enrollment.
  • Report damage: Simply report damage to your home online.
  • Download documents: Download forms and information, such as the termination form.

Registration and login

You are automatically registered once you have completed the application form. Your login details can be found in the e-mail you received from us. If you have forgotten your password, you can request a new one in the portal.

What you can do if you have damage in your home

Report the damage to the property manager immediately. You can call them or send a message via the portal.

You can simply terminate a rented apartment again

If you want to cancel your apartment again, fill out the cancellation form and send it to us.

Student financing

This makes it easier for you to finance your studies if you don't have enough money

Studying costs money. You have to pay rent, semester fees and your living expenses. We can help you finance your studies. These options are available to you to finance your studies:

BAföG

With BAföG, you receive money from the state to pay for your studies. If you meet the requirements, you can receive up to 992 euros per month. However, how much you receive depends on your income and that of your parents. You only have to pay half of it back later.

Apply for BAföG

You can easily apply for BAföG online. The portal will guide you through the application step by step. Upload all the necessary documents and you will receive feedback.

Study start-up aid

The Study start-up aid gives you 1,000 euros to help you get started with your studies. You don’t have to pay the money back. You can apply for the aid from 01.09.2024.

Who can receive the study start-up aid?

  • You are under 25 years old
  • Enrolled at a university for the first time from 25.07.2024
  • You received one of the following social benefits before your studies:
    • Citizen’s income
    • Housing benefit
    • Benefits for asylum seekers
    • Child supplement
    • Basic security and other benefits

Apply for the study start-up aid

You can apply for the study start-up aid online. The application must be submitted within two months of starting your studies. Prepare all important documents.

Daka student loan

The Daka loan gives you up to 12,000 euros. You don’t have to pay any interest. The loan is particularly helpful during stressful phases of your studies. If you are studying in North Rhine-Westphalia, you can apply for the Daka loan. You have to show that you need the money. You also need a person to vouch for you.

This is how much money you can get

  • Up to 12,000 euros for your studies
  • Up to 6,000 euros for stays abroad
  • Up to 1,000 euros per month as a monthly payout

Costs and repayment

  • You must repay in installments of at least 150 euros per month
  • The cost is 5% of the amount you received
  • There is no interest or further costs if you repay on time

Apply for the Daka loan

You can simply apply for the Daka loan online. Prepare all the documents and secure financial support for your studies.

Emergency assistance

Sometimes you have financial problems during your studies. If you suddenly find yourself in financial difficulties, we offer emergency aid. This includes a one-off grant of 496 euros that you don’t have to pay back. We also offer interest-free loans and free meals.

Emergency scholarship

In special cases, you can receive 496 euros as one-off assistance. You do not have to pay the money back. You can get more information in a consultation.

Emergency loan

If you are in an emergency, you can get up to 1,500 euros as an interest-free loan. You have to repay the money in monthly installments. You can get more information in a consultation.

Free table

If you are in a financial emergency, you can have 50 euros loaded onto your MensaCard. You must have less than 10 euros credit on the card.

Household goods and clothing

At the “Schatzkammer” in Bismarckallee 3, 48151 Münster, you can get or hand in donated items such as clothes, household items and toys. The “Schatzkammer” is run by students for students.

You can book an appointment with us on our website if you would like to apply for an emergency grant, emergency loan or our free table. We will advise you and help you with the applications. Counselling

We help you with problems and support you with our advice

Sometimes there are problems at university or in your private life. Studierendenwerk Münster is there for you. We help you with worries big and small so that you can concentrate on your studies. You can get free and anonymous advice if you wish.

If you have worries, such as financial problems, stress with your home or family difficulties, you can come to the social counselling service. We will listen to you and help you find a solution. You can ask us such questions:

The Studierendenwerk Münster organizes many cultural events for students.

Our stage formats and projects

  • Viva Open Stage
    The Viva Open Stage is for students and young artists. Here you can sing, recite texts or do comedy. Everyone is welcome. The Viva Open Stage takes place several times a semester in the Viva Campus Café. Check the calendar of events for the dates.
  • Readings
    At our readings, you can read your self-written texts aloud. Whether poems, stories or diary entries – here you can present your work to an audience.
  • Exhibitions

  • Queerer Stammtisch
    Our Queerer Stammtisch is a safe place for queer students. Here you can exchange ideas and make new contacts. We meet twice a month. Everyone is welcome.
  • Franco-German voluntary service
    Every year since 2017, a volunteer from France has come to support us in Münster. The volunteer stays for 10 months and helps with projects such as the French regulars’ table.

Childcare in kindergarten

The Tausendfüßler and Chamäleon daycare centers offer care for children aged 1 to 6. The daycare centers are located near Aasee and the Gievenbeck district and offer plenty of space for playing and learning.

Kita Tausendfüßler

Our Tausendfüßler daycare center on Kardinal-von-Galen-Ring offers a loving environment in which children can discover the world through play.

Opening hours: Monday – Friday: 7:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. (45 hours), 8:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. (35 hours)

Kita Chamäleon

The Chamäleon daycare center on Rudolf-Harbig-Weg offers flexible childcare hours and creative activities for children. It is close to the university campus and perfect for student parents.

Opening hours: Monday – Thursday: 7:30 am – 5:00 pm, Friday until 3:00 pm

SeeZeit

Would you like to gain your first professional experience? You can get to know different areas by doing an internship with us.

Would you like to work with children? Then an FSJ in one of our daycare centers is just right for you. You will support our team for 12 months and learn a lot about working with children. In return, you will receive at least €470 per month.

The Studierendenwerk Münster

We support around 60,000 students in Münster and Steinfurt. Our aim is to ensure that your studies are successful and well secured. We have been around since 1922. We have 560 employees. We offer accommodation, healthy food, financial advice, childcare and help in difficult situations. We are always there for you.

What we do for you

Studierendenwerk Münster wants to protect the environment. We are working on producing less waste and becoming more sustainable. Here you can see what we are doing to protect the environment.

Our awards:

  • In 2024, Mensa Bispinghof received 4 stars from PETA for its vegan menu. Mensa am Ring was also awarded in 2023
  • We are part of “Fairtrade Town Münster”
  • We have been working with foodsharing e.V. since 2017 to save food

Reporting accidents

You are automatically insured against accidents with your semester fee. This also applies to accidents on the way to university. In the event of an accident, the Studierendenwerk will take care of the processing.
