Since the beginning of July, the nationwide project “KlimaTeller in der Mensa” has been added to our menus – visible through three new symbols that indicate which dishes are more climate-friendly than comparable standard dishes. “With the new labeling, we are creating transparency and making it possible to make a conscious, climate-friendly choice at lunch,” explains Catharina Calvez, Sustainability Manager at the Studierendenwerk.
This is what lies behind the symbols:
The KlimaTeller is awarded to dishes that produce at least 50% less CO₂ than a comparable standard dish – all emissions from the field to the plate are taken into account.
The CO₂ cloud shows the greenhouse gas emissions of a dish – color-coded from green (low) to red (high).
= CO2 consumption is at least 50% better than average.
= CO2 consumption is better than average.
= CO2 consumption is worse than average.
The water drop provides information about the water consumption of the ingredients.
= Water consumption is below average.
= Water consumption is twice as high as the average.
= Water consumption is more than twice as high as the average.

The “KlimaTeller in der Mensa” project is backed by NAHhaft e. V. and Greentable e. V., developed in cooperation with Eaternity. Around 20 student services organizations across Germany are now participating in the project for more climate-friendly nutrition in their facilities.
