“The Chancellor’s Promise on BAföG Must Be Kept”: Press Statement by the Deutsches Studierendenwerk

In response to statements by Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz that the BAföG reform will proceed as agreed between Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil and Research Minister Dorothee Bär, Matthias Anbuhl, Chairman of the Board of the Deutsches Studierendenwerk (DSW), said:

“The chancellor’s word must be binding: According to Friedrich Merz, the BAföG amendment will be implemented—as stipulated in the framework resolution on the federal budget agreed upon by Dorothee Bär and Lars Klingbeil. This would mean both improved benefits and a simplified BAföG system. If Friedrich Merz keeps his word, he will demonstrate that he has the interests of the younger generation in mind. This would put an end to the federal government’s erratic course on student financing. This would be good news for students; they must not be disappointed.”

A tall stack of files and folders lies on a desk, on top of which sits a thick German-language reference book. In the background, office equipment and furniture can be seen out of focus.
