The Counselling/International/Culture department works with and for students. The department is divided into the areas of social counseling, international affairs, studying with children and culture. Here is a brief introduction to the advisors.
Counselling
Barbara Tepe-Wrasmann
Hello, I’m Barbara Tepe-Wrasmann and I’m head of the Counselling – International Affairs – Culture (BIK) department. I’ve been working at the Studierendenwerk for almost 20 years and have been actively involved in shaping the work of the social counseling service since it was founded. In addition to all the administrative tasks that come with managing a department, I am also responsible for providing advice to students, prospective students, university members and graduates in the transition between studying and working.

Responsibility and diversity
I particularly enjoy the variety and diversity of my work. On the one hand, taking responsibility for an organizational unit with all its organizational, personnel, administrative and management activities and, on the other hand, direct contact with students from all over the world and all universities in Münster and Steinfurt to support them in their development and in finding individual solutions. It is often the close and good cooperation with colleagues from other departments and (university) institutions that not only gives me personal pleasure, but is also an important part of the success of our work for the students.
2023 was the year after Corona, which once again enabled an active and varied program of events with in-person participation. The response to the events, the utilization of the offers, the development of new, demand-oriented events were a great success. Creating structures that enable this return to “old normality” is a highlight.

Medina Oprea
My name is Medina Oprea and I coordinate the International Affairs department, with the projects “Welcome”, “Discover Germany & the World” and the Dorm Tutors Project. I am also responsible for general Counselling, I run information events and English-language workshops on stress management in nature and I am the deputy head of department.

Working directly with people
The diversity of the areas of responsibility and the enrichment that comes from the internationality and the coming together of so many different cultures has made me passionate about this exciting job for fourteen years. Above all, I love working directly with people. The best thing about it is seeing concrete results in practice, helping young people to progress successfully in their studies and taking away wonderful memories from this time.
For me, 2023 means a colorful tapestry of small and large successes: the breakthrough of our Welcome project, with the Welcome@Dorm greetings in the residences with the distribution of gift bags, the first edition of the open-air International Dorm Festival at Wilhelmskamp, the StudentsWelcome party in the fall or getting to know the different cultural traditions and festivals of the world, such as the Hindu Diwali or the Japanese Setsubun. Our international cooking workshops and cultural excursions have also been very well received, such as the trip to Berlin in the summer. The students are definitely keen to discover everything and network with each other. I find this appreciation very touching.
Studying with a child
Anna Koopmann
I’m Anna Koopmann and I’ve been working at Studierendenwerk Münster for 10 years. I advise students who are becoming or have become parents on all aspects of studying with children. Topics often include financing, childcare, study organization and balancing studies and family life. Together with my student volunteer family tutor, we offer various leisure, networking and information events for student families.

Support during an exciting phase
Even after years in the job, I still really enjoy working with students. I get to support young people on their way through their studies and in the phase of starting a family. I find the balance between organizational and bureaucratic tasks, such as applying for funding from a foundation, direct contact in the counselling sessions and the family events we organize with students and their children particularly balanced. In 2023, we organized a very well-attended family summer party in front of the castle in Münster. Pregnant students increasingly attended my consultation hours and counseling services. Much of the Counselling takes place digitally. I was also very pleased to receive an invitation to the Albertus-Magnus-Kolleg. Young student families live there, for whom we organized an information afternoon with childcare on site.
Culture
Gesa Baltruschat
My name is Gesa Baltruschat and I have been working at the Studierendenwerk since October 2020. My main tasks are in the area of culture. Together with my tutors, I organize cultural events for students at Münster’s universities. These include, for example, stage formats such as the Viva Open Stage, events in the area of sustainability, such as the clothes swap, and events for queer students.

In order to design new events and further develop existing ones, I have come to particularly appreciate the exchange with the cultural officers of the student unions throughout Germany in 2023. For this reason, I have been an elected member of the Deutsches Studierendenwerk’s Culture Committee since 2024. Another important part of my day-to-day work is coordinating the Franco-German voluntary service. In this context, I work together with our cooperation partners at the Romance Department of the University of Münster and the City of Münster to organize Franco-German event formats.
Creating culture together
My professional highlight in 2023 was that we were able to offer a stage for student newcomers and artists from Münster with the new edition of the Viva Open Stage. I enjoy encouraging students to perform their self-written songs on our stage for the first time, for example. We are also particularly pleased with the positive feedback from the audience, which is also reflected in the number of visitors (up to 300 people). Our cultural mission as a student union is also to make our cultural events as free of charge as possible so that all students can participate in culture. That is why we do not charge admission to the Open Stage. Creating culture together is a matter close to my heart and this is made possible above all by working with our volunteer tutors.
„Ich fühl mich in Deutschland wie Zuhause“
„Ich finde, man muss seine Nachbarn kennen”, erzählt Léopold Bouchard. „Deutschland und Frankreich haben eine lange gemeinsame Geschichte. Als die größten Länder in Europa sind sie besonders wichtig für den Erhalt der EU. Wenn wir Kontakte im Alltag schaffen, schaffen wir auch mehr gegenseitiges Verständnis füreinander.”
Schon früh erste Berührungspunkte mit Deutschland
Léopold selbst hatte schon früh erste Berührungspunkte mit Deutschland. „Ich komme aus dem Elsass, genauer gesagt aus Griesheimsur-Souffel. Das liegt direkt an der deutsch-französischen Grenze. Wir hatten zum Beispiel schon in der Grundschule Deutschunterricht,” erzählt der 24-Jährige. Nach seinem Theaterwissenschaftsstudium an der Universität in Straßburg bewarb er sich über das Deutsch-Französische Jugendwerk für den deutsch-französischen Freiwilligendienst. „Ich wollte die Menschen, die Kultur und das Land weiter kennen lernen”, erzählt er. Und das mit Erfolg! Seit Mitte September unterstützt er nun als Ehrenamtler für 20 Stunden in der Woche die Abteilung Beratung, Internationales und Kultur des Studierendenwerks Münster. „Wir möchten jungen Menschen hierdie Chance geben, ihre Deutschkenntnisse zu verbessern, das Land kennenzulernen und dabei auch den Austausch zwischen Frankreich und Deutschland fördern”, erklärt Gesa Baltruschat. Sie betreut mit Léopold bereits ihren vierten Freiwilligendienstler. „Es ist immer spannend, jungen Menschen zu helfen, sich weiter zu entwickeln. Als ausgebildete Beraterin schätze ich vor allem die Beziehungsarbeit.”
Aufgaben persönlich zugeschnitten
In seinem Berufsalltag organisiert der 24-Jährige mit Hilfe von Studierenden eigene Veranstaltungen, wie den regelmäßig stattfindenden französischen Stammtisch oder Theaterbesuche. Die Veranstaltungen haben immer einen deutsch-französischen Bezug und sind speziell für Menschen, die sich als Franzosen verstehen oder an der französischen Kultur interessiert sind, gedacht. In Zusammenarbeit mit dem Romanischen Seminar an der Universität Münster leitet er sogar eine eigene kleine Theatergruppe. „Ich habe viel Spaß, Gruppen zu organisieren,” erzählt Léopold. „Ich mag es einfach, Verantwortung zu tragen und den Raum für die deutsch–französische Freundschaft zu gestalten.” Dass die Aufgaben zu Léopolds Werdegang passen, ist kein Zufall: „Wir schneiden die Aufgaben für jeden Ehrenamtler persönlich zu,” erklärt Gesa Baltruschat. „Jede Person hat eine unterschiedliche Persönlichkeit, eine andere Arbeitsweise und verschiedene Qualitäten. Wir versuchen Aufgaben zu finden, die zum Einzelnen passen und sie sogar in ihrer späteren beruflichen Laufbahn weiterbringen.”
Um den Freiwilligen den Start in Münster zu erleichtern, stellt das Studierendenwerk den Ehrenämtlern eine Wohnung in der Wohnanlage am Wilhelmskamp zu Verfügung. Neben einer Aufwandsentschädigung von der Freiwilligenagentur Service Civique in Frankreich, erhalten sie außerdem einen einmonatigen Sprachkurs, eine monatliche Mensa-Karte im Wert von 50 Euro sowie das Deutschlandticket. Die Partnereinsatzstelle des Studierendenwerks ist das Romanische Seminar der Uni Münster. Dort ist Marianne Vézinaud als Tutorin im Freiwilligendienst tätig. Die Dozentin bietet Seminare zu Phonetik oder Linguistik an, die die Freiwilligen besuchen können. „Wir versuchen, so gut es geht zu unterstützen”, erklärt Gesa Baltruschat. „Viele haben noch nie alleine gelebt und sind dann zum ersten Mal ganz auf sich gestellt. Für die erste Auslandserfahrung ist es vor allem zu Beginn des Freiwilligendienstes, wenn die sprachlichen Barrieren noch höher sind, hilfreich, eine Ansprechperson zu haben, mit der man sich in der eigenen Muttersprache unterhalten kann und welche die soziokulturellen Unterschiede in Deutschland und Frankreich kennt. Marianne ist Französin und lebt und arbeitet seit vielen Jahren in Deutschland.”
Studierendenwerk als Glücksfall
Für Leopold ist die Abteilung Beratung, Internationales und Kultur vom Studierendenwerk ein Glücksfall. „Es ist eine ideale Stelle für ein freiwilliges soziales Jahr. Seitdem ich hier bin, ist mein Deutsch sehr viel besser geworden.” Bis August bleibt der Elsässer noch in Deutschland, dann geht es zurück nach Straßburg zum Studieren. Gesa Baltruschat hofft, dass auch nächstes Jahr sich wieder ein Freiwilliger oder eine Freiwillige findet – denn derzeit gibt es mehr Einrichtungen in Deutschland, die das Projekt anbieten als Ehrenämtler. Léopold bereut es nicht, nach Münster gekommen zu sein. „Es ist wie ein großes Dorf”, lacht er. Heimweh hat er übrigens noch keins: „Ich fühle mich in Deutschland schon wie Zuhause. Nur das mit der Weinschorle, das werde ich wohl nie verstehen.“

A free top-up of €50 on the Mensa card if the card balance is less than €10. Account statements from the last 3 months, the semester certificate and the completed free table application must be submitted.
Children's plate
Students can take their children (up to the age of 14) to bistros and canteens. They receive a child-friendly portion free of charge. This card is valid for one semester. The child’s birth certificate, the semester certificate and the completed form are required.
Emergency scholarship
In cases of particular hardship, a one-off subsidy may be granted. There is no entitlement. Further information will be discussed in a personal consultation.
Loans
Students who are not entitled to BAföG and who find themselves in an emergency through no fault of their own can apply for an interest-free loan. This request will be examined intensively on a case-by-case basis. The loan can only be offered in acute emergency situations.
