Changeover to price system for summer semester 2022
At the beginning of the summer semester, the change in the pricing system that had been planned for some time was implemented. Instead of the menus offered until then, the offer was changed to component meals.
In contrast to the previous menu, all components are offered individually. In addition to an even more balanced selection for all diets, as a vegetarian and vegan option is always offered alongside meat or fish, the advantages also include price transparency for students and other guests.
At the same time as the price system was changed, the war in Ukraine and the energy crisis led to an increase in purchase prices and severe supply difficulties. In order to be able to ensure a cheap supply in such times, a cutting machine for fruit and vegetables was purchased, which made it possible to fall back on the significantly cheaper piece goods. In addition, ingredients and dishes, some of which were affected by price increases of 10% to 90%, were temporarily removed from the menu so that the selling prices of the individual components could continue to be offered at a fair price.

Bistro Durchblick
On 16.05.2022, the bistro reopened after a long period of closure. Due to significant deficiencies, the facility had to be closed and completely renovated in 2017. In cooperation with the university, the kitchen, serving area and dining rooms were modernized so that students can now enjoy a significantly improved quality of stay and power sockets at all seats. The food on offer was redesigned with a particular focus on vegan and vegetarian food.
Bistro PI
Following the closure due to the coronavirus, it was decided together with those responsible for the building at the WWU that the facility would not reopen until it had been renovated. Thanks to active support from the university, the guest area has almost been restored. Windows have been replaced, walls painted, a new floor laid and new seating ordered. The kitchen area has also been completely gutted. As soon as the newly planned furnishings have been delivered and installed, the location will be able to provide a regular service again. An opening is planned for 2023.
Mensa am Ring
With the aim of increasing the quality of out-of-home catering, various appliances in the Mensa am Ring have been replaced. Thanks to the two new blast chillers, dishes can be produced in such a way that they can be quickly reheated in the bistros in very good quality as required. The nutritional properties of the food are largely retained. Another plus point is the reduction in food waste.
Reusable
Together with the city of Münster, the Münsterland e.V. association, DEHOGA Westfalen and local restaurateurs, the new reusable glass system “Glas? Clear!” was developed. The combination of Relevo’s reusable distribution channels and Arcoroc’s glass bowls offers great advantages for everyone involved in implementing the German Packaging Act. The new reusable system is low-waste, high-quality and uniform. In addition, glass can be recycled indefinitely and is 100% recyclable. The reusable bowls are available in all Studierendenwerk catering facilities. Alternatively, students can also bring their own containers.
Bistro Peace
The facility has been closed since the start of the 2020 pandemic. Due to significant shortcomings, it is currently being examined whether and how the bistro can be reopened. This requires further coordination with the university.
Water dispenser
The first free water dispenser for students was put into operation in the Mensa am Aasee in 2022. It offers a choice between chilled and unchilled still water and chilled carbonated water while maintaining high hygiene standards thanks to a touch-free dispensing unit and a UV lamp. The device also enables quick and convenient dispensing and easy cleaning thanks to the touchpad control panel.
Students can either help themselves to the glasses provided or bring their own bottles and fill them. In future, the other Studierendenwerk facilities will also be supplied with water dispensers.
liba
Due to the coronavirus, the switch to a regional beverage range could not be implemented until 2022. The choice fell on the Münster-based lemonade start-up liba: liba is vegan, follows short routes, bottles in glass, wants to serve the common good, remain fair and is building the brand with an awareness of the environment and society. The company wants to get closer and closer to its goal of producing various drinks exclusively regionally. That is why liba is marketed, developed and stored in Münster. It is not yet possible to have our own bottling plant in Münster just for liba. For this reason, all lemonades, mate and cola are bottled at Haaner Felsenquelle in Wuppertal and brought to Münster. The extensive avoidance of plastic, bottling in glass bottles and the use of high-quality mineral water result in higher costs, but also lead to high-quality products.
Drinks from liba have been available in all Studierendenwerk catering facilities since the end of 2022. The vending machines will also be gradually converted to liba.
Events to mark the 100th anniversary
To mark the centenary of the Studierendenwerk, the Department of Catering Services organized events such as the Decade Dinner and the Pasta Campaign. The decade dinner began on 17.02.2022 for the centenary with a modern interpretation of Königsberger dumplings with beet mash and heaven and earth at the price of 100 years ago. Following this, special dishes from all decades were presented month after month, most recently a red cabbage steak with goat’s cheese and potato and celery puree.
The pasta machine was tried out twice with students in the Bispinghof canteen and the results were then enjoyed in a convivial atmosphere.
